Five Day Course offered by Mrs D Alderson
In his book Dyslexia an Overview, M. Critchley states that ‘Dyslexia implies…. a difficulty, not in reading but in the use of words, how they are identified, what they signify, how they are handled in combination, how they are pronounced and how they are spelt’. Specific developmental dyslexia may be more simply defined as unexpected difficulties in the acquisition of reading, writing and spelling skills all of which are essential in Education.
From these definitions it is clear that dyslexics do not fall tidily into a number of different categories, each with their own remedy or solution. Rather, each student’s difficulties are as unique as the student himself or herself. This is the understanding that underlies the short course which we offer.
The Aim of the course is to unlock solutions to problem areas, to consolidate areas of strength and introduce the student to coping techniques.
The course is delivered over five days, each day’s instruction lasting approximately one and a half hours, with a short break. Students will be expected to undertake simple assignments in their own time, in preparation for the following day’s tutorial.
The detailed content focuses on meeting a individual student’s specific identified needs. In outline the course is delivered as follows:
Day 1
During the first session both (a) parent and student are invited to discuss areas of weakness, drawing on ed. psych. reports, any available school reports and the student’s own experience of school. During the second session on Day 1, following a short break, some appropriate diagnostic tests will be administered. The day will end with a short discussion about the assignment to be completed before Day 2.
Days 2 – 4
Assessment of previous day’s assignment.
One to one teaching using multi-sensory methods to improve:-
Discussion of final assignment, course overview and student evaluation.
A Report is written on each student on the completion of the course, which will be sent to the parent/guardian.
