Extra-curricular activities and children with learning support needs

It is well recognised that many of the world’s leading artists, athletes, musicians, actors and entrepreneurs are dyslexic and that life for them in the classroom has often been an extremely difficult environment in which to succeed.

A 2011 survey instigated by the Independent Schools Council highlighted the fact that the UK’S independent schools are exceptional in devoting a lot of time and resources to sport, music, drama, dance, clubs, societies, community service, cadet forces, The Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Young Enterprise scheme. Recognising that these activities build skills and enthusiasm and help develop personality characteristics such as teamwork, self-motivation, resilience and concentration.

The vast and varied range of sports on offer in UK independent schools will undoubtedly give every pupil an area in which to shine, it may not be one of the traditional sports, but in sailing, golf, fencing, badminton, or horse riding.  The same is true in music; with many schools having a plethora of music from individual instruments to participating in orchestras, rock bands, choirs and music theatre.

In recognition of the importance of extra-curricular activities, independent schools in the UK employ first class professional coaches, artists and performers to teach these subjects to the highest level, something unlikely to be available to most students in the international school arena, where resources are generally limited. Stability and continuity, as well as a breadth of education is key to the success of a dyslexic child.

The UK is recognised as having some of the best teaching in the world, and with first class boarding facilities it is possible for a child to study in the UK and yet be only hours away from home. Each child we assist has individual needs and a unique family situation. We understand that perfectly. We are with you every step of the journey, removing the anxiety and complexities of applications, school viewing, interviews, assessment, reports and paperwork.
