Learning The Art Of Touch-Typing By Mrs N Fulford
Touch-typing is an important life skill, never more so than now with the advent of computers. Learning the art of effortlessly using multiple fingers without having to look down at the keyboard is a liberating experience for any student.
The touch-typing course uses TTRS (Touch Type Read & Spell) [www.readandspell.com] along with other touch typing programmes. TTRS is a particularly powerful multi-sensory programme for dyslexics as it works on students reading and spelling, at the same time as teaching them to touch-type. It is based on the ‘Alpha to Omega’ literacy programme created by Beverley Hornsby.
Good Touch-typing skills do not just benefit dyslexics and those with poor handwriting. Students with this talent will gain an ability to increase their speed of input, this, in conjunction with the computer, gives them a better chance of accurate note taking in class along with reducing the stress of homework. Students are able to edit ideas into a logical order, make any changes or additions and then proof read easily. The final piece of work will be well presented, perfectly legible and with no evidence of any of the alterations made. This helps boost confidence and self-esteem.
Intensive week holiday course
The perfect vehicle for either, introducing a complete touch-typing novice to the keyboard or to refresh skills and improve speed for the less confident typist. The intensive week holiday course takes place for 2 hours per day over five days, Monday through Friday (a total of 10 hours). The entire alphabet keyboard is covered, along with the shift key (for capital letters), full stop, comma and the space bar. It is essential to learn the correct finger movements along with understanding the importance of sitting correctly so as to keep both hands and body relaxed. Accuracy is of the utmost importance. Students work at their own pace to ensure that the finger/key positions are secure and that they are keeping their eyes on the screen (not their fingers!), once these skills are in place they can then start to focus on their speed.
